Connor Jones - Front Man & Vocals

I’m Connor, the front man...

I play piano, and sing. I really love what you can do on a piano, it is one of the core musical instruments but I love to sing too – and my voice is a hell of a lot easier to carry around than my piano.  I have always been a big fan of music, I remember when I was very young and I used to love Abba! Music sort of took hold in my life when I was 7, I started to play the keyboard and that’s when I started listening to other bands.  I like modern day punk bands that include Blink 182, The Offspring, Arctic Monkeys, Badly Drawn Boy, Enter Shikari, Reel Big Fish. I’m also a big fan of musicals.

The thing I look out for at a gig is a band that really seizes my attention. If I go to a gig and the first band are just standing there, lifeless, I get bored and I hate to say it, but I walk out. Whereas if the second band are jumping around the stage getting the audience involved and they look like they’re having a good time, I can guarantee you I’m going to be at the front moshing!  Selium are out to give people a good time and that means lots of energy, shouting and jumping.

I wasn’t there when Selium was created, I first joined when the three original members, Jack, Jonny and Harry, heard me sing at a concert where they were playing one of their first songs Green.  It was an instrumental number - because they didn’t have a singer – but it sounded excellent.  About a week later they asked me to be their front man!  We work hard to make a big impression on stage and I think we have some pretty catchy riffs – of course, I am biased. In this time of money problems, just invest in a ticket to watch Selium play! That will cheer you up – value for money guaranteed!

I try hard to make every minute count when I am performing - singing is only part of the front man’s job.  At the first heat of Maidenhead Battle of the bands, we had just finished our first song, Conclusions and I asked the audience to put both hands in the air and wave their hands and shout ‘gravy’. I got some really, really strange looks, but what really mattered was that no one had ever done it before!

A Selium gig always has to be different from anything you’ve seen or heard before – that’s my motto.
